Just as an ordinary material like cardboard can be used to build anything from a doll's house to a submarine, a film crew can create a great experience out of nothing.

Festival Opener

INSTANT36 is an open impromptu festival for film enthusiasts in which participants create a short film in just 36 hours and present it to an expert jury at an official screening in Salzburg (Austria).

For the 2022 edition of the festival, an opener was created to herald the start of each film block. This year's theme was "cardboard". The textures used are therefore paper and cardboard, the CI colours used are the red and black of the Instant36 logo in combination with the grey-brown of the cardboard. Slight irregularities are deliberately created to achieve a paper-cut look.

Approach

Visual research and concept
In terms of design, the influence of motion design legend Saul Bass was obvious. The audience is guided through a film set in the style of a papercut animation. We enter through the lens of a camera, in whose reflection the various film departments are presented in a stylised manner: By panning upwards, we can roughly recognise the outlines of microphones/sound bars. By travelling sideways, we get to know the home of the lighting department. We then visit the costume, production design and finally the editing department. After the set tour, we arrive at the destination of every film: we reach and touch the audience.
